rae is in Vallarius, France on her month long residency.When she returns she will be showing her work at the Renegade Craft Fair in SF July 9 & 10.

Christa will be hitting the road soon teaching workshops at Anderson Ranch and visiting Archie Bray for this awesome clay event.

Josie is heading for a summer in the snowy mountains. She will return briefly to participate in the ACGA - Palo Alto Clay and Glass Festival July 9 & 10.

We hope to see you at one or all of these events.

Things are buzzing at fourth & clay as we get get ready for the Berkeley Artisan Holiday Open Studios. They begin the Saturday after Thanksgiving - Nov 28 and continue for every weekend until Dec 20. We will be open from 11-5 pm. Check out rae's blog to see what she's been up to in the Santa's workshop department --- it's pretty amazing.

This year we've invited 3 guest artists who's work we love...
Susannah Schnick who makes wildly creative embroidered bags
Circadian Studios who's fabulous jewelry is simple and elegant
Linea Carta who's letterpress paper goods and textiles are a total delight.

We are also participating in an awesome event that brings together 48 of the Bay Area's best ceramic artists for one night. This will be a great opportunity meet the artists and to do a little holiday shopping. The group is called CAB+ (Ceramic Arts of Berkeley). A portion of the sales will go to the ceramics program at Martin Luther King Jr High School. It takes place at Leslie Ceramics,1212 San Pablo Ave, Dec 4 from 5 -10 pm. Hope to see you there.

Off the Wall

Our seconds sale was a great success. Thank you everyone who came and supported us. A BIG thanks also to Whitney Smith, Sharon Virtue and Sara Paloma, our guest artists. We not only had good sales but a good time - what could be better.

I've delayed reporting a sad event in our neighborhood but now is the time. Our building was known in the area for having the most beautiful "free wall" for graffiti. Famous painters came far and wide to add their art, the greatest works were never painted over. The artists were respectful, talented people. We've had numerous videos shot there, folks would pose and have their portraits taken there, drivers would stop and ponder the wall in awe. OK, why is this sad? Because the new owner of the building had the wall painted over last week....that's right. It is now a dull gray and the wonderful art underneath that paint is SCREAMING.

Under Construction

Our studio is under siege. A fabulous Indian restaurant and Berkeley institution - VIKS- is moving in next door. We were initially thrilled. This will mean infinitely more foot traffic for our gallery. We'll also have delicious lunches within steps. Their construction plans meant changing the configuration of our storage area. These past few weeks they have been knocking down walls and turning off our electricity for 24 hour periods. Construction dust has been wafting through a hastily set up plastic wall causing white outs. Our kilns, though still working, are pushed into spaces that are ridiculous to access. The place looks like the predicted big quake has already come and gone. On Friday the jack hammering begins. They are promising the remainder of the work that affects us will only last two weeks but two weeks when you're trying to make,glaze, ship, get ready for shows is a lifetime. We will be open ...construction gods willing... for our regular first Saturday on April 4. Hope you can come by and see if we survived.

Plaster Disaster

Andrew Martin's workshop was, I think, a huge success. His generosity in filling us full of his vast knowledge was incredible. He gave us something else as well... We had a nice crowd of 17 participants watching with rapt attention when Andrew hefted a 10 gallon bucket of freshly mixed, delightfully gooey casting plaster on to the demo table. With too strong of a heave ho he missed the table and projectile dumped 3/4 of the white, liquid sludge on to the first row of rapt potters. Everything was covered - shoes, clothes, purses, backpacks, books, chairs, floor. Thankfully laughter was the immediate response and as potters are famous for doing, everybody pitched in and cleaned up the mess. The wonderful workshop will forever be known as the Plaster Disaster. Thanks to everyone for being such good sports.

Happy Holidaze

Our party was faboo. Tons of people showed up. The band, FrontJunk was fun and funky. Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin covers played on the banjo, harmonica, washboard and drums by 2 guys was kind of unbelievably cool. I was too busy spiking the egg nog to take pictures but my husband John managed to make this funny little video.

Our studio is humming with activity. Christa and I have been working away but are really missing rae who is off on her honeymoon. She will return shortly and we will be so happy to have her back. We have some great new work in the gallery. Here's a picture of our current window:

Summer's almost over and as fun as it was we are all looking forward to getting back to work at fourth and clay. It kind of feels of the first day of school... happy to be back with friends, full of anticipation and hopes for the year ahead. The gallery will be open and Christa will be there next Saturday (Sept 6) so if you're in the area please be sure to stop by, say hi and check out our work.

rae's work at the ACGA show

Josie and rae survived the ACGA Show. It was well attended and the weather behaved beautifully. Thank you all who attended and supported us. Christa has returned from her exotic pottery adventure in Greece. She had a wonderful time.

Summer's are crazy at fourth & clay. We are coming and going. Christa will be teaching a workshop at Anderson Ranch Aug 4 -15. rae is preparing for a huge event that we are all very excited about. Josie is working at her studio in the mountains for the rest of the summer. She's making clay with the squirrels and bears as her crtitics.

Our gallery will be open when we are there working. You can tell as the big roll up door will be up and our sign will be out. Just come on in. We will be happy to see you.

This Saturday is day one of the weekend long ACGA Clay and Glass Festival in Palo Alto. It's a huge show featuring 180 of the best ceramics and glass artists in California. We are proud to be members. We have been busily making tons of new work, it looks like it's going to be sunny and you will be dazzled by all the great stuff there is to see. If you are in the area please come visit us (Christa isn't participating this year as she is going off on an exotic pottery adventure in Greece).

Last week a big container of pottery stuff arrived at fourth & clay along with the potter herself.....Christa Assad. She will be permanently here in mid June as she had to return to Kansas City to get her truck. We can't wait to have our studio totally finished and full of pot throwing women.

Don't forget that this Saturday (11 - 5) we are open and would LOVE company.If you're in the area please stop by, have a cookie and see what we've been up to.

Thank you everyone who came and made our first annual Seconds on 4Th Sale a HUGE SUCCESS.

Welcome to the fourth & clay blog.

fourth & clay is a pottery studio/gallery located at 2390 "C" 4th St.,Berkeley CA (510 848 2390).
It is the home of rae dunn, Josie Jurczenia and coming soon (in June) Christa Assad.
On this blog we will keep you posted of our coming events, new work and anything else we can share to make this blog as fun and as lively as our studio is.
We hope you visit here often.

The gallery is open whenever we are there (which usually every day except Sunday) and ALWAYS the first Saturday of the month 11-5.

May 3-4 we are having a HUGE SECONDS SALE, BBQ and GRAFFITI PRODUCTION. There will be more posts about this but be sure to save the date. It's going to be a killer event. Joining rae and Josie will be well known Bay Area clay artists Diana Fayt, Whitney Smith and textile designers (making beautiful handmade bags) - Susannah Schnick and Nancy LA Rose. Famous graffiti man, Mel and crew will be painting on our outside wall. Firing up the grill John Schnick (sculptor and BBQ guy extraordinaire) will be cooking free hot dogs with purchase. Beautiful first quality work and extreme bargains on seconds will be available...Sound like fun? Please come join us (10 - 6 on Saturday and 11-5 on Sunday).
